HEIC to JPG on a Mac

A Mac already opens HEIC. You still want JPG when a form, a Windows colleague, or a print shop asks for JPEG. Preview and Photos can export it. Stayshot is the other path when you would rather not repeat Export for every file. The original can stay on the Mac either way.

Export JPEG with Preview

  1. Open the .heic in Preview. On a current macOS, double-click is enough.
  2. Choose File → Export.
  3. Set Format to JPEG, pick a quality, and save. You get a .jpeg beside the original, which stays HEIC.

Preview exports the picture you are looking at. A weekend of shots means repeating those steps. The JPEG keeps the photo’s EXIF, including location. Preview’s Export dialog does not have a switch to strip it.

Export a selection from Photos

  1. Select the photos in the Photos app.
  2. Choose File → Export → Export Photos.
  3. Set Photo Kind to JPEG, choose a quality, and export to a folder.

That is the built-in way to convert more than one file, and it works. It is also easy to leave Photo Kind on the original format, and a large selection is a long export you wait on. Camera data and GPS ride along in the JPEG. Keep that for your own archive. If the file is going to a client or a website, it is often more than you meant to send.

Use the browser when the folder is the problem

Stayshot is the same local HEIC to JPG converter, running on the Mac. Drop several files at once — batch convert HEIC to JPG explains the free limit and the $9 unlock. EXIF is stripped unless you opt in. Keep EXIF copies make, model, capture time, and GPS. The pixels are already rotated, and orientation is stored as 1. Nothing is posted to a conversion server.

A Windows PC often cannot open the HEIC at all. HEIC won't open on Windows is that case. To stop new iPhone shots from being HEIC, see iPhone photos to JPG. The free version includes 5 conversions in this browser. Need more than that, or HEIC to PDF? Pricing is the $9 lifetime unlock: unlimited conversions in this browser and HEIC to PDF (one or many photos). ZIP download is free.

If the files are already on the Mac

  1. Leave the .heic files where Finder can see them.
  2. Drop them on the converter above. Files past the free conversions you have left are refused at drop, not during Convert.
  3. Download each JPG, or Download all as ZIP when more than one file has finished.

FAQ

How do I export a HEIC as JPEG in Preview on a Mac?
Open the file in Preview, choose File → Export, set Format to JPEG, and save. The original HEIC stays put. Preview exports the image you are viewing, so a long folder means repeating that step.
Can the Photos app on a Mac convert a selection to JPEG?
Yes. Select the photos, then File → Export → Export Photos, and set Photo Kind to JPEG. Check that menu — it is easy to leave it on the original format. The export keeps camera and location data.
Does Preview remove location data when it writes a JPEG?
No. The JPEG from Preview or Photos still carries EXIF, including GPS, unless you strip it afterward. Stayshot strips EXIF unless you turn on Keep EXIF.
When should I use Stayshot instead of Preview?
When you have more than a couple of files, or you want the JPG without location data before you email it. The converter runs in the browser on the Mac. Files are not uploaded.
